The short answer
Most people who reach voicemail do not wait. They call the next business on the list. Clients tell me they try hard to call back, usually 15 to 45 minutes later, and by then the caller has usually booked someone else or is waiting on another callback. Missed-call text back or an AI receptionist covers that gap the moment the call is missed.
Why the caller does not wait
Think about how you find a contractor yourself. You search, look at the businesses at the top with the most stars, and call the one you trust most. If nobody picks up, you do not sit around hoping for a callback. You have your own day to get through, so you call the next name.
Most home service businesses are owner operated or have fewer than ten people, and they spend the whole week in the field. When you are up on a roof, under a sink or talking with a customer, the phone goes to voicemail. That part is normal. The problem is what the caller does after the beep.
What a late callback actually recovers
Clients have told me they call back as fast as they can, usually somewhere between 15 and 45 minutes after the missed call. Nine times out of ten, that person has already found someone else, or has left a voicemail with a competitor and is waiting to hear back from them.
A referral will wait for you because they asked for you by name. A stranger who found you on Google usually will not.
Two ways to answer when you cannot
Missed-call text back sends the caller a text within seconds, so they know you saw the call and can reply with what they need. It keeps the conversation open while you finish the job in front of you.
An AI receptionist goes further. It picks up, has a real conversation, answers the common questions and books the appointment on your calendar. It also covers calls that come in after hours, which would otherwise sit until morning.
- Text back: an instant reply, and the caller can explain the job by text
- AI receptionist: answers the phone, asks the right questions and books
- Both put the lead in your CRM, so nothing depends on memory
Is it worth it?
It is not for everybody, and some owners do not want AI on their phone line. But from what I have seen, if it captures even one extra job a month, it more than pays for itself. Clients who added text back or an AI receptionist booked noticeably more work in the months after setup than in the months before.
If you miss calls, or you get calls after hours, it is one of the easiest fixes there is. Whatever you think about AI, it is better than letting the call go to voicemail. Missed-call text back and the AI receptionist are included in the AI Growth plan and above; Pricing lists what each plan covers.
